Ben and Libby Jackson and Lily Eckstein completed their RYA Stages 1 and 2 with us during the week of October 11th. Their initial work was in our larger dinghies, the Omega and the Argo, but here are the photos of them completing later elements of the course in the Toppers.

RYA Stages 1 and 2 course in October 2016
The Topper is a great single-handed boat for juniors or adults. Less powerful than a Laser it can be sailed with a 5.3m mainsail or a 4.2m both of which can be reefed for lighter sailors or windy days.
RYA Stages – 1, 2, 3 or 4 – you choose how far to go!
The RYA stages are designed for younger sailors, normally up to 14 years of each and provide a progression from zero to hero! Stage 1 is aimed at introducing juniors to the sport of sailing and can be completed either in a crewed boat such as the Argo or single-handed in the Topper (in lighter winds).
Stage 2 allows a junior sailor in a single-handed boat to demonstrate the skills of sailing alone and in a group. Stage 3 introduces a little theory and refines the skills, ensuring that the sailor can sail on all points of sailing, safely. Successful completion of Stage 3 is roughly equivalent to an adult Level 2 certificate.
Stage 4 covers the same ground as RYA adult Level 3 and is all about good boat handling without direct supervision in a variety of boats and wind conditions.
