Three junior sailors completing RYA Stages 1 and 2The school sailing project starts! Europa Surf & Sail and FV MalcesineCharles escapes from the office!Final RYA dinghy course of the 2015 season

Ben, Libby and Lily completed their RYA Stages 1 and 2  with us during the week of October 11th.  Their initial work was in our larger dinghies, the Omega and the Argo, but here are the photos of them completing later elements of the course in the Toppers.

RYA Stages 1 and 2 course in October 2016

The Topper is a great single-handed boat for juniors or adults. Less powerful than a Laser it can be sailed with a 5.3m mainsail or a 4.2m both of which can be reefed for lighter sailors or windy days.

RYA Stages - 1, 2, 3 or 4 - you choose how far to go!

The RYA stages are designed for younger sailors, normally up to 14 years of each and provide a progression from zero to hero! Stage 1 is aimed at introducing juniors to the sport of sailing and can be completed either in a crewed boat such as the Argo or single-handed in the Topper (in lighter winds).

Stage 2 allows a junior sailor in a single-handed boat to demonstrate the skills of sailing alone and in a group. Stage 3 introduces a little theory and refines the skills, ensuring that the sailor can sail on all points of sailing, safely. Successful completion of Stage 3 is roughly equivalent to an adult Level 2 certificate.

Stage 4 covers the same ground as RYA adult Level 3 and is all about good boat handling without direct supervision in a variety of boats and wind conditions.

School sailing initiative takes off

A new school sailing initiative by Europa Surf and Sail with the Fraglia Vela Malcesine to introduce school children from Lombardia, Trentino and Veneto to the sport of sailing attracted schools from the Veneto region for three days of mixed aquatic sport.

Earlier this year, groups of teachers were invited to sample our facilities and meet the instructors and managers of Europa Surf and Sail and of the Malcesine Sailing Centre (FVM). As a result, many planned trips for their students and nearly 100 students have now experienced sailing, many for the first time.

The days were split into dinghy, catamaran, SUP and kayak sessions and everyone had the chance to be active in steering and crewing boats as well as managing SUPing and kayaking.

Demonstrating windsurfing on Garda Lake - the duck gybe

Windsurfing on Garda is tremendous fun as there's a strong wind on 80%+ days with a choice of Beaufort 4 to 5 in the mornings or Bft 3 - 4 in the warm, afternoon wind. See more about  windsurfing on Garda here.

... and here's some action over the waves at Limone

It was a rare chance for Charles to enjoy windsurfing as there was a really good wind and, strangely, no clients to watch over. It was very windy over by Limone (about 2km from our beach - 4 minutes on a planing reach!) so its the Starboard Kode 103 with a Severne Blade 5.3m.

We rent large boards and small, dacron sails to beginners and have advanced boards and performance sails for more experienced sailors. See the range here.

Gill and Andrew Schofield demonstrating the best way to recover a 'man overboard' during an RYA dinghy course

Despite it being October, we had bright sunshine and warm winds for our final RYA course of 2015 - an RYA Dinghy course (Level 2) in one of our Topper Topaz Argos. Everything was set fair for the usual tasks of picking up a mooring and the 'man overboard' manoeuvre, featuring Europa Surf and Sail's very own MOB - BOB!

Gill and Andrew hope to practise their skills on Lake Zug, near Zurich but we also hope to see them again for the hot, windy days in June, July and August next year, perhaps in one of our ISOs?

RYA courses at Europa surf and sail

We run RYA dinghy courses, RYA catamaran courses and RYA windsurf courses throughout the summer. Our RYA courses are personalized to suit our clients and range from the intensive 2-day certificate course which runs from 09:00 to 17:00 each day to the more relaxed afternoons only 5-day courses. Usually each course is for one small group or family which maximizes your time learning while doing!
