School sailing initiative takes off

A new school sailing initiative by Europa Surf and Sail with the Fraglia Vela Malcesine to introduce school children from Lombardia, Trentino and Veneto to the sport of sailing attracted schools from the Veneto region for three days of mixed aquatic sport.

Earlier this year, groups of teachers were invited to sample our facilities and meet the instructors and managers of Europa Surf and Sail and of the Malcesine Sailing Centre (FVM). As a result, many planned trips for their students and nearly 100 students have now experienced sailing, many for the first time.

The days were split into dinghy, catamaran, SUP and kayak sessions and everyone had the chance to be active in steering and crewing boats as well as managing SUPing and kayaking.

We have refurbished a Hobie Tiger F18 catamaran while it is on loan to us at our beach. The Hobie Tiger is a Formula 18 high performance catamaran with centreboards which now has new ropes, blocks and elastics and all dents filled with the hulls polished and foils repaired which means that it is back to racing condition but of course, it had to be tested!

John and Giuly, Ciaran and Hannah and Liam and Ciaran all trying out our new F18 catamaran, the Hobie Tiger. Now rigged with a gennaker it's tremendous fun but only available for tuition, not rental.

For our beginner catamaran courses, or RYA conversion courses, we mainly use the Hobie 15 and the Hobie 18 Pacific with lighter sailors using the Topper Topaz 16 with its simple gennaker system. More advanced courses. Our Topaz 14s and Topaz 12 enable younger sailors to sail by themselves.

A school group comprising 30 pupils from Leonardo da Vinci middle-school in Verona came to spend a day on the lake and to try the sport of sailing for the first time.

School party from Verona comes to visit!

Monday, May 18 2015
A school group of 30 juniors in the first grade of Leonardo da Vinci middle school spent a day with us. They enjoyed a beautiful bike ride to visit Malcesine and its castle and catamaran and dinghy sailing!

The sun and the wind made for an exciting day and none hesitated to enjoy the speed and thrills from high-speed catamarans with water spraying over everyone as the boats bounced over the waves. Everyone had a try at steering the boats and many also used the trapezes to experience  the excitement of crewing modern dinghies and catamarans! Some adrenaline and lots of laughter accompanied the trips, watched over by their school staff. The day ended with the students singing a song in English ("If you're happy and you know it ....") !

A beautiful day successful thanks to Prof.ssa Zampieri (Giuly to us) who accompanied the school group, organized everyone and helped out with launching and recovery as well as taking the photographs above. Thanks also to the kids for joining in so enthusiastically and making our job easy!

Thanks to the Leonardo da Vinci School of Verona for the wonderful day!

Europa Surf and Sail hosted a VDWS Instructor training fortnight during September and October 2014. 11 sailors took the course to become VDWS watersports instructors for dinghies and for catamarans using the wide range of boats available here at Europa Surf and Sail.

VDWS instructor training, run by Christian Bartezaghi

Instructor training at Europa Surf and Sail on Lake Garda - organized by the German sailing organization VDWS. Instructors from across Italy came to participate in the training for two weeks in dinghies and catamarans and were taught the methods and syllabus of the VDWS system (similar to the RYA system but using separate advanced modules after the basic licence (or 'Grundschein').

We all learned teaching methods both theoretical and practical and had the chance to practice the manoeuvres we have to demonstrate such as sailing backwards, man overboard and coming alongside. Much of the course was in Bft 5 wind which made it challenging for all.
